Pulitzer Prize-Winning Historian
Edmund Morris
to Speak in Wallace, Idaho, World Silver Capital,
in Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of
President Theodore Roosevelt's Visit
Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Edmund Morris, author of The Rise
of Theodore Roosevelt and Theodore Rex will speak in
Wallace, Idaho on Saturday, June 28, as part of a major weekend
history symposium commemorating the 100th anniversary of President
Theodore Roosevelt's visit to Wallace in 1903, according to H.F.
Magnuson, President of the Northern Pacific Depot Foundation
and the Wallace District Mining Museum.
Roosevelt visited Wallace in May of 1903. The event at the time was
marked with a parade and gathering for Roosevelt's speech at the
Wallace City Park. Magnuson says the centennial commemoration will be
equally exciting. In addition to Morris' talk, the weekend symposium
will feature other talks and panel discussions on subjects relating
to the early history of the mining district, the 1892-99 labor wars,
the historic importance of the Coeur d'Alene Mining District and the
future for the Silver Valley.

Other activities include a parade on Saturday afternoon, and a street dance. A planning committee consisting of Wallace residents Michael Alldredge, R.W. Caron, Chris Stuecker, Dennis O'Brien, and John Amonson has been appointed to plan the event, according to Magnuson. The event will be co-sponsored in part by the Magnuson Family Foundation and the Idaho Humanities Council, which will hold its summer board meeting in Wallace over the symposium weekend. |

| Born in Kenya, Morris came to the United States from Britain in 1968. Initially, he wrote a screenplay about Theodore Roosevelt's ranching days in North Dakota. This led to a contract for The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, which was recognized as a towering historical narrative of Roosevelt's pre-presidential life. It won the Pulitzer Prize and American Book Award in 1980 and has never been out of print. In 2001, Morris published the second volume of what will be a Roosevelt trilogy. Theodore Rex was an immediate New York Times best seller. He is also the author of Dutch, a biography of Ronald Reagan. Morris, witty as well as erudite, gives audiences a historical perspective on American leadership. He effortlessly relates examples of Roosevelt and Reagan in action to the challenges that face our President today. He welcomes questions and greatly enjoys the spontaneity of a dialogue with members of his audience. | |
