2010 Huckleberry Festival

click image to open letter size pdf poster in separate window 		On August 20 and 21, 2010, the Wallace Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the town's traditional "third weekend in August" festival. Originally called the Huckleberry Festival, it spent a year or two as the Heritage Festival, and is now known as the Huckleberry Heritage Festival... or HuckFest for short. Each year it includes a blend of familiar and new events according to the desires of the unique band of volunteers who step forward in the spring to coordinate this major summer festival. In 2010, there is robust feast of events spread out for the enjoyment of everyone in your family, plus many events to commemorate the Great Fire of 1910, honor the lives lost fighting this and other forest fires, and recognize the changes made in forest fire management resulting from this confageration that burned three million acres in northern Idaho. Festival hours are 10 AM to 8 PM on Friday and Saturday, complete with evening street music.

New Events in 2010
  • Unfortunately, the Huckleberry Bicycle Hill Climb scheduled for Saturday, August 21, had to be cancelled because of unexpected Dobson Pass Road repair. Plan to join us next year, as the Friends of the Coeur d'Alene Trails again host the Hill Climb to Dobson Pass in the morning (after the 5K Run/Walk), followed by an evening criterium around a five block course in downtown Wallace.
  • On Friday, August 20, the Forest Service will dedicate the Mass Grave Site for Pulaski's Crew at the Nine Mile Cemetary, 12:00 PM.
     
  • Click to go to Huckleberry Festival 2010 - photos and winners page On Saturday, there will be a parade through downtown Wallace to the Visitors Center, where a dedication of the Firefighter and 1910 Memorial will take place.
    • Engine Procession: Engines from all over the Northwest will make their way though the Silver Valley, from Rose Lake to Mullan, then back to Wallace.
    • Walking Procession: At 11:45 AM, a walking procession will make its way from exit 62 west along Bank St. to the Wallace Visitors Center. The procession will be comprised of the US Forest Service and Coeur d'Alene Fire Department Honor Guard, Coeur d'Alene Fire Department Pipe and Drum Corps, US Forest Service Pack String, Buffalo Soldiers, firefighters, and fire engines.
    • Click to go to Huckleberry Festival 2010 - photos and winners page 1910 Memorial Dedication: Beginning at 12:45 PM, speakers will include: Mayor of Wallace, Governor of the State of Idaho, author Timothy Egan, and US Forest Service Director of Fire and Aviation, Tom Harbour.
     
  • The 1910 Fire Commemoration brings honor to the Fire Fighters who lost their lives in the historic fire that burned 3 million acres and changed forest management forever. Come spend an evening with four incredibly talented historians on the events that unfolded in August of 1910. There will be an open bar with finger food provided after the presentations, which will be held at the Wallace Elks on the corner of Fifth and Cedar Streets. Admission is $5/evening. The Elks can accomodate only 300 people; you can make sure you have a seat by reserving and paying ahead. Go to the website www.firecoop.org or call (208) 784-0821 to reserve your seat.
Traditional Events
  • Rotary's Huckleberry Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, August 21, 7 to 11 AM at the Jr/Sr High School
  • 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, August 21
    • Registration at 7:30 AM, Jr/Sr High School
    • Fun Run starts at 9:00 AM
  • Election (by bribes made at sponsoring businesses) of the Huckleberry Sheriff and Huckleberry Hound
  • Craft vendors on the lawn at the Railroad Depot Museum
  • Food vendors on Sixth Street
  • Kid activities including Sixth Street baseball, mini-golf, bean bag toss and the ever popular Inflatable Jumping Castle
  • Huckleberry Bake-off competition at the Senior Center
  • Music at the Gazebo on both days from noon to 8 PM.
