At Straight Up Noon, on Saturday, June 16, 2012, the Wallace Gyro Fraternal Organization dropped a large leather ball into the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River to begin the 71st Annual Mullan to Wallace Lead Creek Derby. It was a beautiful day for a bike ride along the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes following the ball downstream to Wallace, where the third night of Carnival ended a another mellow Gyro Days celebration.

Winners of the 71st Lead Creek Derby

The Wallace Gyro Club sells chances on the time it takes for the ball to make it's seven mile journey to the Sixth Street bridge in Wallace. The money raised through ticket sales and bike ride registration goes to the Gyro Scholarship Fund which awards scholarships to local high school students for college or vocational school.

First Prize of One Hundred .999 Fine Silver Rounds was won by Jae Jean Achord of Silverton, whose ticket came the closest to the actual and very fast time of 2:56:48.10.

This year the silver was the old silver dollar coins, mostly Peace Dollars, that were made out of an ounce of .995 pure silver. (They were not ".999 fine silver rounds" as awarded in previous Derbies.) The Gyros would like to thank all of their numerous sponsors, especially the biggest donors for 2012: Hecla Charitable Foundation, Mammoet, and NW Mine Supply / True Value. The organization is now out of silver, so if you have silver rounds or bars to sell or donate, please contact Dean Cooper at the 1313 Club, (208) 752-9391.

Thirteen other prizes for varying amounts of cash were also awarded.

  • 2nd - 6th won $100
    • Gordon Radford from Hayden, ID
    • Kris (Lilienkamp) Bischoff from San Diego, CA
    • Trish Nickelby of Wallace
    • Jeremy Nordquist of Wallace
    • Roann Humphrey from Pinehurst, ID
  • 7th - 11th won $50
    • Linda St. Peter from Osburn, ID
    • John Baker of Wallace
    • Scarlet Boca from Osburn, ID
    • Dan Hussey of Wallace
    • Shauna Hillman of Wallace
  • 12th - 14th won $25
    • Mike Haskins from Burke
    • Courtney Lavigne from Missoula, MT
    • Paul Strobel of Wallace

Tickets were $1 each. A computer program randomly matches each ticket number with a unique and precise finishing time. If you compare this year's fast time of 2:56:48.10 to previous Derby times, a rough estimate of the race time might correlate to the maximum snow depth at the summit of Lookout Pass Ski Area during the previous ski season. However, the random amount of time spent rescuing the ball from obstacles always makes it a horse race.
