At Straight Up Noon, on Saturday, June 19, 2010, the Wallace Gyro Fraternal Organization dropped a large leather ball into the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River to begin the 69th Annual Mullan to Wallace Lead Creek Derby. It was a beautiful day for a bike ride along the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes following the ball downstream to Wallace, where the third night of Carnival ended a mellow Gyro Days 2010 in a spectacular way.

Winners of the 69th Lead Creek Derby

The Wallace Gyro Club sells chances on the time it takes for the ball to make it's seven mile journey to the Sixth Street bridge in Wallace. The money raised through ticket sales and bike ride registration goes to the Gyro Scholarship Fund which awards scholarships to local high school students for college or vocational school.

Win 100 Troy ounces of these 0.999 fine silver Centennial rounds
First Prize of One Hundred .999 Fine Silver Rounds was won by Ron Willhite of Gem/Burke, whose ticket came the closest to the actual time of 4:54:13. These 1884-1984 Wallace Centennial rounds were provided this year by NASCO, the Native American Services Corporation.

Thirteen other prizes for varying amounts of cash were also awarded.
  • 2nd - 6th won $100
    • Bob Herd of Wallace
    • Janet Sundberg of Spokane, WA
    • Scott Madsen of Missoula, MT
    • Rossi Insurance in Wallace
    • Bob Herd of Wallace (again... it pays to buy lots of tickets)
  • 7th - 11th won $50

    • Joe Grismer of Wallace
    • Gordon Radford, Lucky Friday Mine
    • Albi's/Antonio's/Billy Bob's/Pedro Chang's Restaurant in Wallace

Tickets were $1 each. A computer program randomly matches each ticket number with a unique and precise finishing time. Compare this year's time of 4:54:13 to the 2008 Derby time of 3:09:24, which followed the outstanding 2007/2008 ski season, when the maximum summit snow depth at both ski areas was a hundred more inches than last ski season.
