The Smoke House Barbecue and Saloon is located in the DeLashmutt Building, which was erected in 1890, following a major fire in the downtown district. It served as the Shoshone County Courthouse from 1898-1905 when a new structure was built one block east. Before that, it housed Segar's Stationery Store and the Wallace Post Office. The upper story rooms were known as the "Court Rooms" and provided "female boarding." In 1911, A.C. Cogswells moved into the building and opened a cigar business. Cigars were manufactured in the back room and sold and smoked in the area now occupied by the restaurant and saloon. By 1920, the inside decor had been turned completely brown from all the cigars that had been consumed by his patrons. The decision was made to change the establishment's name to the "The Smoke House" and a bar was added. The original tin ceiling and walk-in safe are still in place and in use today. Mr. Cogwells had installed a wall humidor, which today houses gifts and home accessories for sale. As you enter the building, the name COGSWELLS is laid out in marble tile at your feet. In 1980, area artist John Hart painted a 100 foot long wildlife mural above the back bar. It took John approximately four weeks to complete the mural; he traded beer for his masterpiece. In 2000, a proprietor changed the name of the establishment to Cogswells Coffee House and Saloon, and began a music series with some of the talented and diverse folk singers who travel the Spokane, Washington, to Missoula, Montana, I-90 circuit. |
